1. Field Trip to Davis Transfer Station in San Leandro 

We visited the recycle company at the Davis Transfer Station in San Leandro where we learned about the 4 R’s; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot.

2. Arts and Crafts/Cooking 

In our arts and crafts class, we were making ornaments and face spritzers in Garden class to give as gifts for our families.

Providing Meals in After-school Programs

Tuesday, Dec.  13, 2011, 10:00–11:30am PST

You’re invited to participate in a free webinar to learn how your after-school program can provide federally-reimbursed meals in addition to snacks. This new option under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 is available now through the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).
About the Webinar
You will learn the benefits of the new meal option, how to apply, the requirements and best practices. After-school programs, community partners, food-service providers and school districts are invited to participate.

California Afterschool Network will host the webinar, which builds on the information presented in the June 7 CACFP webinar and features new best practices. We encourage you to invite your food services director to join you on the call. Nutrition Services Division experts will be available to answer your questions.

Senator Mark DeSaulnier Receives Champion of Summer Learning Award

National Summer Learning Association honors Sen. DeSaulnier for his work to expand access to summer programs

Congratulations to Senator Mark DeSaulnier on receiving the Champion of Summer Award from the National Summer Learning Association (NSLA). At the opening night reception for the 2011 National Summer Learning Conference in San Francisco, NSLA interim CEO Matthew Boulay presented Sen. DeSaulnier with the award in honor of the senator’s ongoing efforts to improve the quality of, and expand access to, summer-learning programs throughout California.

New Due Date for 21st CCLC and ASSETs Grant Applications

Important Update

Jan. 11, 2012 is the extended submission date

The After School Division of the California Department of Education has announced that the due date for both the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) program and the After School Safety and Enrichment for Teens (ASSETs) grant applications has been extended until Jan. 11, 2012. This extension will allow applicants more time to enter information into the ASSIST online grant application system.

About the RFAs

CDE has released two Requests for Applications (RFA) for 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) funding—one for elementary and middle school, and one for high school after school programs.

21st CCLC funding can support after-school, before-school, summer, weekend and intersession programming.  Eligible applicants include school districts and other LEAs, community-based organizations, cities and counties.

The new due date is 5:00pm PST, Jan. 11, 2012.

Healthy Behaviors Conference, Dec. 7th – 9th in San Diego, CA

The BOOST Collaborative & the Center for Collaborative Solutions (CCS) continue their collaboration to provide enhanced support and lead national K-12 educators in the out-of-school time field to promote healthy lifestyles for youth. As a result of this collaboration, the organizations will provide this second annual conference – Changing Lives, Saving Lives December 7-9, 2011 in San Diego, CA.
